(Just another wreck in the car park of life!)
Axle refurbishment
As you can see from the pictures above the axle, like the car was showing signs of being stood, not good! Although the car has only covered 39,000 miles corrosion had got hold of some area's. The plan was to clean the axle, fit an LSD and poly bush every fixing location, that went out the window soon after the first enquiry on price! As I have said before finances are stretched so with divorce pending, and because I am a tight git I decided that the diff was mint and did not want changing. The polies however were needed as the rebuild would come to a halt if they were not fitted. I contacted Superflex and found that yes, they could supply the bushes, but no, they were not cheap! Ho well, I sold some bits I had to pay for the bushes, ouch! It was about this time that I had an idea, you see I had a Volvo 940SE turbo that I had scrounged for bits for my own 940. When I say scrounged I mean I gave £117 for her, well after running her for four months while the T&T ran out and selling a few bits it was a scrounge! Now the 940ES has the multi link axle, and the multi link axle has a locker diff, not an LSD but when your as skint as me it's as good as! Would a 1992 diff from a 940SE fit a 1968 axle from a 142? Well, yes it bloody well dose! Not a problem, just remove the locker, change the crown wheel and slip the the old girl into the 142 casing, simple! Please don't contact me asking about preload and heel an toe on the pinion, yes I know about these settings and how crucial they are, but hey the thing aint going far so I though bugger it! If one day I find there is a prob I'll have another look, but not now, not when things are going so well. While I was cleaning the axle and all it's linkage, pan hard rod etc, I realised that the trailing arms were looking a little weak due to corrosion. So they have been strengthened to take the increase in abuse that the car is most likely going to get. Below are some pic's of the axle etc before and after the refurb.
I know it's hard to tell but the pic's at the bottom are the refurbed items
Refurbed links etc
Well the day has come, the axle is back were it belongs, and apart from the passenger side boot well things at the rear are now solid again. Going to move forward from here but the boot and it's odds and ends have to come first! Some pic's of the finished rear end and axle, seems some time ago since I started this job, but I am really chuffed that the springs and shocks are in, and the 940 SE alloys will really set the car off!
